Built in the early 1990s, the Dean B. Ellis Library Clock Tower is an iconic Arkansas State University landmark. It is part of the Dean B. Ellis Library complex which was named in honor of professor emeritus of mathematics and a long-time Arkansas State faculty member. Originally built with 4 bells, it is now a 24 bell carillon. The tower is often used for ceremonial purposes and is illuminated in various colors to commemorate significant events.
A public university, Arkansas State was founded as the First District Agricultural School in Jonesboro, one of four district agricultural schools founded in 1909 by the Arkansas General Assembly. It became A&M College - First District Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1925, Arkansas State College in 1933, and it attained university status in 1967 becoming Arkansas State University.
