Bonnie Alberts

Welcome to She Studios! I'm Bonnie Alberts, founder, owner, curator, and creator. I run She with a lot of help from my family and with the support and collaboration of my friends, a network of talented female creatives I’ve met and worked with along the way. A lover of all things creative, She brings my diverse passions together under one virtual roof.

BACK STORY

My first creative love was photography. It has been a part of my life since I was a kid. Like a decades long marriage, we’ve had our ups and downs and occasional separations along the way, but we’ve never strayed too far from one another. A box camera first exposed me to the beauty of solitary seascapes, rural landscapes, and stark, cold winter scenes. From the very beginning, the resounding theme in my images has been one of solitude.

While living in Italy, I became increasingly interested in color and texture, the deep saturated colors of the Mediterranean and the gritty textures one might only find in a centuries old city. Never straying far from the theme of solitude, even in a chaotic city of 1 million souls, I began “unplugging” my images from the noise that surrounded them. It was also in Italy where I found expression through travel writing. I developed the Napoli Unplugged Website, created and co-authored the Napoli Unplugged Guide to Naples, and I wrote about Naples and the Amalfi Coast in various print and online publications.

An unexpected move brought me to Arkansas where I am starting a new chapter and am finding new expression through essay writing, creating mixed media collages, and designing a variety of artful products for She, drawn from my journeys around the world and the people I’ve met along the way.

Through She, I hope to bring you beautiful and thoughtful art, fine art photographic prints, artful books, whimsical note cards and stationary, and other creations that give voice to the faces, places and stories I’ve encountered along a road well traveled.

 Why She?

I settled on the name She to celebrate the many talented, intelligent, creative, impassioned, strong, confident, and amazing women I’ve met along the way.

While much of my work is rooted in my travels, it is equally inspired by these women, the women I’ve met along the way as well as the women I wish I had met along the way. I hope that through my work, I can call attention to the women who have routinely been under represented in our historical record and in our local, regional and national monuments and memorials.

She’s twin purpose is to honor my fellow women veterans, to recognize and celebrate their service to this country, a custom that I think is lagging well behind our male counterparts. I served in the U.S. Navy for ten years, working in a “non-traditional” field for the Naval Security Group. As a female veteran, I worked side by side my male counterparts, hour for hour, and overcame the same challenges, endured the same hardships. And yet, female veterans’ service is rarely celebrated, often overlooked, and there is the notion that we were playacting like Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin. It is my sincere hope to both help change that perception and through She, to support my fellow women veterans by giving a portion of all She sales to women veterans.
